Background

Organisation History
After our founder met Buzz Schmidt the Founder of GuideStar US, UK and International at a meeting of philanthropy marketplaces in South Africa in October 2004, we started as a project of GiveIndia and Credibility Alliance in the year 2005 to explore if the GuideStar model was relevant to meet India's need for an NGO information repository, and if yes, how could it best serve the country's needs. The project involved meeting a variety of stakeholders from the government (Income Tax, MHA- FCRA, Planning Commission), civil society leaders, producers of then existing NPO directories, large networks, philanthropic intermediaries and foundations. A steering committee of eminent representatives of stakeholder groups advised the project. Subsequently the project was managed for a brief period by Murray Culshaw Consulting. In 2009, a separate trust called Civil Society Information Services was formed to set up and run the GuideStar India portal and create solutions needed to organise NGO information to drive greater social impact.

Purpose & Strategies
To educate, encourage and equip Indian NGOs to voluntarily share, in the public domain, information that advances transparency, enables better decision making and encourages charitable giving.

Vision
Indian philanthropy and non-profit practice revolutionised by the use of civil society information. Better NGO data, smarter decisions, wiser and efficient giving, leading to greater social impact.

Chief Executive's Profile
Pushpa founded GuideStar India (www.guidestarindia.org) in 2009, after 18 years of scaling innovative organisations including running GiveIndia as its COO and a decade of experience in the financial services sector.

In 9 years since she founded GuideStar in India, it has emerged as India’s most reliable NGO information repository strengthening the Indian philanthropy ecosystem to do good, effectively and efficiently for greater social impact. She has positioned GuideStar India as a friend of the NGO community, working with them to embrace transparency and enhancing their capacity to access philanthropic resources. With more than 9000 Indian nonprofits showcasing their work on GuideStar India and over 100,000 NGOs in its offline database, GuideStar India helps users find reliable NGOs of their choice. In 2015, Pushpa launched a rigorous due diligence programme to certify NGOs which has now come to be recognised as a standard for identifying credible NGOs by a number of intermediaries such as Dasra, Good CSR, GivNow and Small Change.

Earlier, as the COO of GiveIndia, Pushpa played a significant role in the scaling up of NGOs on its platform. Through her pioneering work at GiveIndia, she demystified online philanthropy to Indian NGOs by working out simple, yet effective ways of making disclosures and reporting back to donors. Pushpa streamlined NGO due diligence in India using self reported data and compliance information. Having vetted more than 6000 NGOs across geographies and causes, she brings rare insights into India’s complex and diverse NGO sector.

Pushpa is a Member of Advisory Council of GuideStar US, a Global Leader for #GivingTuesday.

Pushpa is an MBA Gold Medalist and a Senior Global Fellow of the Synergos Institute, New York.
