Praja, a Mumbai based, non-partisan organization, was established in 1997 by a group of eight individuals whose vision was to re-establish accountability and transparency in governance. These individuals were also concerned about how people had become apathetic towards public service agencies, thinking them to be corrupt & inefficient. At the same time, there was barely any interaction between Citizens & local government. Praja’s initial efforts were concentrated on improving the capacity of the BMC to deliver better services and be responsive to the people in order to activate Citizens' interest in the affairs of local government. The formulation of Citizens’ Charter in 1999 was the beginning of our work with the municipality along with the later Online Complaint Management System. Our efforts have benefited all segments of the society including slum dwellers, the densely populous North Mumbai, the elite of South Mumbai, and grassroots and umbrella organizations working for good governance
To create an informed and engaged elected representatives (ERs), media, government, CSOs and citizenry by conducting data driven research, information exercises and training to deliver accountable, transparent and inclusive governance.
Praja aims to achieve the following: • Creating instruments for change • Making Democracy work • Simplifying people’s lives
