Elected representatives and the government administration to use Praja’s outputs to improve their performance, initiate reforms in the institutional mechanisms in the administration which have a positive impact on governance and in turn the quality of life in wards across Mumbai.
As per the feasibility study for expansion of the project in Delhi initiated in 2014.

Impact: Indicators & Progress
  • In 2011, Praja released data showing that 1,222 people died of malaria in different wards of the city in FY 2010-11. This was eight times the number being used by the municipal government. This contributed to a stronger response to
malaria by the government - The Fight the Bite campaign. By FY 2013-14, malaria deaths fell by 84% from FY 2010-11.
  • Improvement in deliberation by Councilors in the Ward Committees - between 2012-13, questions asked by Councilors
increased by 26%; number of Councilors asking no questions have come down from 45 to 28.
  • Praja successfully advocated with the State Chief Information Commissioner's office to mandate BMC to share
information on the Corporator fund in the public domain, thus bringing about greater transparency in operations.

Background

Organisation History
Praja, a Mumbai based, non-partisan organization, was established in 1997 by a group of eight individuals whose vision was to re-establish accountability and transparency in governance. These individuals were also concerned about how people had become apathetic towards public service agencies, thinking them to be corrupt & inefficient. At the same time, there was barely any interaction between Citizens & local government. Praja’s initial efforts were concentrated on improving the capacity of the BMC to deliver better services and be responsive to the people in order to activate Citizens' interest in the affairs of local government. The formulation of Citizens’ Charter in 1999 was the beginning of our work with the municipality along with the later Online Complaint Management System. Our efforts have benefited all segments of the society including slum dwellers, the densely populous North Mumbai, the elite of South Mumbai, and grassroots and umbrella organizations working for good governance

Purpose & Strategies

Vision
