Goals
Major objective is to create an enabling environment which ensures promotion of children’s rights and quality education leading to prevention of child labour and migration in rural and tribal areas of Rajasthan.
Broad Goals: Target population: children (aged 0 to 18 years) will have:
(i) Increased protection against abuse, exploitation and violence in the villages: prevention from migration for work.
(ii) Improved quality of education with focus on learning at pre-school and elementary and secondary level.
(iii) Enhanced access to social protection schemes for improved income of poor families.


Capabilities & Challenges
• To conduct action research and undertake initiatives on current social issues related to human development, environment and population;
• To organize and strengthen people, institutions, structure and form, as the need arises
• To ensure appropriate strategies and management processes for information through assessment of educational and social realities.


Impact: Indicators & Progress
  • 1. Pehchan project developed as a successful model for replication up-scaling for educating adolescent girls by both Government and NGOs in different socio-geographical settings and imparted quality elementary education to about 1.5 lakh out-of-school children (80%)adolescent girls and mainstreamed them for secondary education in four districts of Rajasthan state in India.
    2. Developed material for ‘transition from Home language local dialect to School language (Hindi)’ for primary grade students in rural and tribal India, as a result of Action Research and also developed model of Child-Friendly Schools in one district and learning resource material is made available to teacher educators and District Institute of Education and Training (DIET).
    3. Strengthened School Management Committees and Panchayat Raj Institutions for effective compliance of Right to Education Act 2009 for ensuring Free and Compulsory Education to all children (6 to 14 years)in rural government schools in three blocks of Banswara and Tonk.
  • 'Pehchan' has been proven as a successful model for empowering adolescent girls through education, received prestigious Dasra Girl Power Award in 2014, and won India NGO Award 2014-15. A Case study of CULP titled 'Contexualization of Primary Education in Small Schools of Rajasthan' carried out in collaboration with Harvard University South Asia Institute and Tata Trusts, published and released on 22nd December 2016 at New Delhi. Background

Organisation History
CULP was registered as a non-profit, NGO by professional and social activists in 2001 with the vision ‘Towards a learning and democratic society’ and mission ‘to make learning unfold and develop in an environment of mutuality and discovery’. CULP journey begins with research studies & an innovative project ‘Pehchan’ for ensuring quality elementary education to out-of-school adolescent girls of socially excluded and economically deprived communities inhabiting in rural Jaipur in July 2002. It was up-scaled with new interventions in 15 districts and currently, being implemented in Jaipur, Dausa,Tonk, Banswara and Pratapgarh districts for strengthening school system to create Child Friendly environment, sensitizing community on child rights and improving health and nutrition status of children and women by strengthening ICDS Services and organizing health awareness and check-up camps in the operational areas.

Chief Executive's Profile
Dr. O. P. Kulhari (b.1959) did Ph.D. from University of Rajasthan, and taught Botany for 6 years, subsequently shifted from higher education to work in Social Development sector, became a part of a professional group in education to provide technical support to the government innovative education projects (mainly Shikshakarmi, Lok Jumbish and Janshala) for universalization of elementary education in Rajasthan. Dr. Kulhari has published several articles and research papers in various national and international journals, conducted / coordinated more than 35 research studies (action research, baseline, evaluation and impact studies) for various organizations, government, UN Agencies, INGOs.
Dr. Kulhari, is the co-founder of CULP, and currently holding the position of Secretary and Executive Director. He has designed and implemented various innovative projects for education of children of most socio-economically deprived communities in rural Rajasthan and developed successful models (such Pehchan for our-of-school adolescent girls, for further replication / up-scaling). Under the leader of Dr. Kulhari CULP has got two prestigious awards, namely Dasra Girl Power Award 2014 in Education and India NGO Award 2014-15 for innovations in education. A case Study of CULP conducted under the guidance of Dr. Kulhari titled ‘Contextualization of Primary Education in Small Remote Schools of Rajasthan’ published by Harvard University South Asia Institute and Tata Trusts and book released at New Delhi on 22nd Dec. 2016.
Dr. Kulhari has also produced several short video films on innovative practices for children in elementary schools which are available on You Tube.

How you can help this Organisation

Volunteer Needs
CULP needs two professional volunteers in our programme in four districts of Rajasthan (viz. Banswara, Dausa, Pratapgarh and Tonk from technical Institutions who are interested to work in social development sector and should have good documentation and communications skills in both Hindi and English and must be proficient in computer. They will also support the organization for strengthening MIS and projecting organizational social impact on various social sites / platforms which could help us to raise funds.


Staff Needs
CULP needs competent person as Director of the organization who can design, monitoring and resource mobilization. He / she can have communications in both English and Hindi.


Funding Needs

Dausa and Tonk) in Rajasthan, Legacy Education,Child Rights and Prajwala project in Banswara and Pratapgarh districts (Rajasthan) for INR 150 Lakhs per year. CULP also needs some restricted / flexible funds which could be utilized during the gap funding in different programmes, capacity building of staff, documentation, research, networking & advocacy and organizational development.
