Programmes

Programme Title
Description
Unit for community media
State
  • Maharashtra
District
  • Nashik
It strives to produce people-centred media in an effort to bring people’s issue to the fore. It produces diverse electronic and digital media forms. Recently, its initiative to support creation of community video on grassroots issues has resulted in community showing interest, and taking efforts to learn different aspect of video. These Video portray stories of struggle, cover issues affecting people’s lives, share innovative approaches, and circulate grassroots reality bringing views and aspirations of the marginalised. The efforts are towards bringing development issues you might have heard, but not seen as images. It endeavours to project the voices of the voiceless, important and crucial, but often ignored and side-lined.
Unit for co-learning & strengthening capacities
We have been providing training support with a view to develop knowledge, skills and attitude amongst different constituencies groups in communication, media and design for developing leadership at various levels. The emphasis is on enhancing two types of capacities, one related to communication and its relevance to the self, organisation and the community, and second, related to design and media for fostering leadership and empowerment. We will also be starting a long-term programme for youth. Our pioneering training programmes are:
Communication
• Interpersonal communication skills
• Communication and facilitation skills
• Team building
• Communication skills for trainer effectiveness
• Leadership for rural women and grassroots leaders
• Youth leadership and social entrepreneurship – a two year programme based on self-designed learning in collaboration with Swaraj University
Media
• Production of community video and radio
• Critical understanding of mass-media
• Use of social media

Organisational Development
• Development management
• Documentation skills
• Understanding organisations
Unit for advocacy and networking
The challenge is twofold. Firstly, creating awareness about digital media forms that will be created by the marginalized communities, and secondly, creating advocacy efforts to reach out to various membersof the civil society. Efforts have to be taken to find media partners at the local, regional and international levels to showcase grassroots stories of exploitation and social justice and leverage the lopsided-ness of coverage. The media resource centres, well equipped with books, journals, photographs, slides, puppets, video documentaries, flannel stories, etc. will help further this cause. The network of small community-based organisations across Maharashtra will work together to facilitate the emergence of new grassroots realities.
The unit will also house a sub-unit of youth leadership and will partner with the ‘AnubhavShiksha’ network in Maharashtra to deepen youth actions and expressions.
