Abhivyakti Media for Development (AMD) has been an innovative media-support organization, founded by young and enlightened media activists - imbued with the ideals of social transformation and development. Established in 1987, the formative and maturing phases of AMD display its sustained forays to connect to NGOs, social movements, capacitating NGOs and social activists in the use of alternative media forms for social action. Some of AMD’s initiatives, both notable and innovative include production of development related media, establishing a media resource centre which today has an impressive 10000 film documentaries and similar number of books; training and capacity building engagements; strengthening media expressions of youth i.e. Anubhav Shiksha; setting up a network of media activists and promoting conscious parenthood, to mention a few. Indeed, AMD has been steadfast with its pioneering initiatives - creating considerable institutional reach in its wake within and outside the state of Maharashtra.
AMD should be credited for first mooting media and communication as a potent path for transformative dialogue and most importantly promoting a critical number of media activists from the marginalized sections of society, working at various levels. In their wake, several media and communication centres have spanned as media expressions of the socially discriminated and excluded communities.
Strengthening the voice of the voiceless.
Abhivyakti believes that critical and creative communities are possible to challenge the hegemonic dominance of the singular worldview. Abhivyakti’s work is to strengthen the processes that develop, enhance and deepen the emergence of creative and critical communities at the grassroots and which rejuvenate grassroots leadership, democracy and social justice.
