Deepam Educational Society for Health (DESH) is a national level, non-profit, Mother NGO, founded in the year 1991, registered under Tamil Nadu Societies registration Act. DESH was founded by Dr. Saraswathi Sankaran, a sociologist specialized in lifestyle analysis. She was motivated to initiate prevention work in HIV/AIDS, based on what she had seen in Tanzania, Africa, during the mid-eighties, and was convinced about the potential threat this epidemic held for India. As early as 1990, DESH started its movement in AIDS control through counselling services at Government General Hospital, Chennai and by conducting STI/HIV/AIDS prevention education programs in villages, slums, industries and educational institutions. Moving on to Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) programs, over two decades, DESH has served various sub sets of beneficiaries. It facilitates the journey of thousands of individuals towards safe life by making them take decisions to change certain harmful behaviour and practices. Empowering women and making them agents for social change is the greatest lead which DESH has adopted.
Mission–Healthier society, safer life style!
Vision–An engine for change
