Goals
Working for the empowerment of the poor and under privileged, with a special focus on women and children, Shramik Bharti facilitates and fosters people’s democratic institutions.

Committed to a human development approach, Shramik Bharti facilitates to enlarge people’s choices by assisting them in the development of their capabilities and preparing them to have better control over their lives.

Shramik Bharti is, therefore, a way of seeing and respecting people. Shramik Bharti’s programmes grow out of that respect and faith in the idea of a truly democratic society, free from exploitations.

Capabilities & Challenges
-Shramik Bharti has long standing presence and rich experience of working on various development issues in Uttar Pradesh and recently we have started our interventions in Punjab.
-Shramik Bharti owns a core team of persons having excellence in different development streams, working as master trainers on Agriculture, Microfinance, WASH( water, sanitation and Hygiene), Maternal Health and Menstrual Health and Hygiene issues. In strong belief of developing and capacitating natural leaders from the marginalized section of society.
-Shramik Bharti has developed a large cadre of natural leaders (approx. 2000), presently working as volunteers.
-The Self Help Groups (SHGs ) promoted by Shramik Bharti have organized themselves into 6 self managed and self sustainable federations, having 20717 members.

Our chief challenge is gaining the trust of the communities and bringing behavioural changes. We work with marginalized communities who have been exploited by various vested interests so trust building is the first and foremost component of development work. Further their risk taking ability is negligible so making them shift to sustainable practices such as natural farming or use of renewable energy whose benefits are not immediately visible is challenging.

Rakesh Pandey is science graduate who started his career with Shramik Bharti as a community worker 1991. His learning of grassroot development work comes from the hands-on experience of working with women self-help groups. His real learning of community processes comes from successfully achieving the challenge of collecting Rs. 1 lakh in a slum of 500 households, Raja Purwa, as community contribution for construction of 50 seat community toilet complex in 1993. The community toilet is still serving the community.

He is professionally trained in NGO Management at IRMA, Anand, in Small Business Promotion at Durham University, UK, and in Microfinance at Naropa University, USA.

Under the leadership of Rakesh Pandey, Shramik Bharti is influencing the lives of more than one million people in rural and urban disadvantaged communities in Uttar Pradesh. Shramik Bharti is doing this through women self-help groups and their federations, land development, rainwater harvesting, sustainable agriculture program, promotion of solar energy, smokeless cook-stoves, biogas initiatives, equine welfare activities, safe motherhood, eye health program, community radio station and Water, Sanitation & Hygiene projects.

Rakesh is leading the incubation of 7 Federations of SHGs as Community Based Organisations, and 2 Farmer Producer Companies, 1 Solar Enterprise and the Community Radio Station as Social Businesses.
