The pitiable, precarious and desperate condition of the Mentally Retarded children in Ambattur and its surrounding area is experienced with serious concerns. Lack of understanding of the problem by the parents and general public, lack of public awareness on the problem and the non – availability of institutionalized care in the neighboring areas were the pressing causes for our intervention. The status of mentally challenged children living below poverty line and downtrodden in the society was also an emerging factor for the rise of this special program.
What made her to work for the “Mentally Challenged” People.
Her own brother being a “Mentally Retarded” person. So she can very well understand the problems of the individuals the family members physically, emotionally, economically and environmentally. Her brother’s case is one among lakhs. If this is the fate of one single individual and family, what about the plight of hundreds and thousands of persons in the vulnerable position all over the country some forward. Who will to take care of these under privileged citizens? Who will wipe their tears? Will there be any “Hope” for them in life she contemplated for a very longtime and finally dedicated herself to this challenging cause. MAIN TARGET GROUP (E.G. SIZE OF TARGET GROUP, SOCIO-ECONOMIC BACKGROUND, AGE OF TARGET GROUP)? 75 Day scholars and 30 residents - from economically poor section in the age group 2 yrs to 35 yrs.
“Promoting the living conditions of the target community by a comprehensive service to develop their values, skills and talent’s through self learning and participatory programmes”.
To serve as a ‘catalyst’ to uplift the “life styles” of the under privileged, socially neglected, mentally challenged and those who live below poverty line with special emphasis on women and children.
