Background

Organisation History
Inspired by the life and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekananda and Mahakavi Subramania Bharathiar, a great poet and social activist of Tamil Nadu, Sevalaya chose to serve in a remote rural pocket where basic facilities were lacking and education was totally absent, and to provide all services absolutely free without any discrimination on the basis of caste creed, religion, sex etc. Of the multifold activities towards this direction, the key is Sevalaya’s Mahakavi Bharathiar Higher Secondary School, providing education up to 12th Standard. The School is recognized by the Tamil Nadu education Board, but without any grant. Like all other services of Sevalaya, the school also offers free education, two sets of uniform, educational tools, stationery. Primary school children are provided free trips to and from the school.

Sevalaya’s school serves about 40 villages surrounding its centre. Over 36 years ago, when Sevalaya’s school started, the village population consisting of farm labourers and brick kiln workers was sending the children to work, not to school. Even among a few who could get education up to basic level, females were excluded. Now the position is that child labour is almost completely eradicated in this area. 2100 plus children attend Sevalaya’s school, approximately half of them are girls. Sevalaya’s school has achieved near 100% results in Public examinations almost consecutively and consistently. In the latest 12th Standard Public Exam, Sevalaya’s school scored 100% results.

Besides the curriculum prescribed by the state educational authorities, Sevalaya has devised a curriculum for Bharathiar-Gandhi-Vivekananda studies which is being systematically taught. This innovation earned Sevalaya the best institution in innovative value based teaching, by the Educational Award Committee, 2006 of “Educational World”. Sevalaya’s managing trustee, V.Muralidharan associated himself with the National Knowledge Commission on their invitation. The commission was set up to advice Prime Minister of India on educational reforms to be carried out in the country. Sevalaya’s children won an international award, where 250,000 children from 38,000 schools from 24 countries participated.

Chief Executive's Profile
Mr. V. Muralidharan (63), an alumnus of Indian Institute of Science, is the founder and managing trustee of Sevalaya, a charitable trust functioning from a remote hamlet, Kasuva, 42 kilometres west of Chennai.

It was a poem of Mahakavi Bharathiyar that he read at the age of 11 that gave the inspiration to dedication towards public service. The poem ‘Vellaithaamarai Poovinil Iruppaal’, wherein Bharathiyar has exhorted that a real Saraswathi Pooja is to provide education to at least 1 poor child, laid the seed for Sevalaya in the mind of Muralidharan. More inspiration were drawn from Mahatma Gandhi’s ideology that “India lives in villages and can grow and prosper only if villages at grass root level grow and prosper” and Swami Vivekananda’s school of thought that “God comes in the form of roti to a poor and hungry man”.

Sevalaya took shape when Mr. Muralidharan finished his Engineering degree from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and joined Tata Consultancy Services in 1988. His subsequent post graduation in Gandhian Thought from Madurai Kamaraj University has enabled deep avenues for rich growth of Sevalaya.

Sevalaya came into being on 29th May 1988 but the planning and preparations, including mobilizing funds began much earlier. As a student Muralidharan along with his friends, introduced a manuscript magazine, Ragamalika, which served as a forum to voice his thoughts on social evils and its remedies. In addition, Muralidharan and his friends formulated Vivekananda Association, a voluntary welfare organization catering help to orphanages and blind schools. It’s worth mentioning that Muralidharan played a significant role in creating an audio library for a school for the Visually Challenged in Bangalore when he was a student of Indian Institute of Science. He also conducted regular week end classes for children in the slums in Srirampur, Bangalore. The first six months expenses of Sevalaya were met out of the savings of Muralidharan. In addition he personally makes financial contributions to the institution every year.

 Sevalaya has transformed Kasuva and 40 surrounding villages in the remote area of Tamilnadu in the last 28 years.

 Child labour has been completely eradicated and villages boast of 2000 students in the Sevalaya School, About 500 alumni pursuing higher education in colleges.
 The institution has produced many software engineers, bank officials, college lecturers besides many qualified electricians, carpenters and plumbers.

 A Community College was started to provide vocational training to rural youth in 5 different courses – Air-Conditioner mechanic, Electrician, Carpenter, Beautician and Tailoring. During 2014-15, 108 students in total passed out and got placements in reputed establishments

 Muralidharan is a strong advocate of woman empowerment. With tailoring and beautician training provided free of cost to village women, they have learnt to live with dignity and self-respect.

 Alcoholism in the villages adjoining Sevalaya has been considerably reduced.

 Besides Sevalaya, Muralidharan is instrumental in conducting Eye/Dental checkup camps and Cancer Screening camps in collaboration with leading hospitals in Chennai, facilitating early detection of disease and cure.

 Cows are revered and respected in our country. It has been our serious passion for millenniums. In order to satisfy this great sentiment Sevalaya maintains a Gaushala to protect cows, mostly dry. As of now, 50 cows are cared in Sevalaya’s Gaushala.

 Mr. Muralidharan has started taking a special initiative to introduce English medium as optional to benefit rural children which will help their higher studies effectively.

 To conclude, Mr. Muralidharan’s passion, initiative, enterprise, action, implementation and coordinating various components has been yielding measurable benefits in terms of changing the lives of rural poor.

Another burning ambition of Muralidharan is to start a rural university absolutely free of charges to cater to the dreams of higher education of meritorious poor and destitute children. To dedicate his time and efforts for this dream, he has given up his lucrative software career as of 31/3/2009 to support Sevalaya full time.
