* St. Jude’s goal is to provide with 1000 units and more, free of cost, safe and holistic care to children suffering from chronic illnesses. St. Judes follows three circles structure – -High level of medical treatment provided by the treating hoapital. -A safe and hygienic space to stay, nutritious food and transport services to and from the hospital for the whole family, during the treatment of their child. -Day to day educational and recreational activities for the children as well as their parents to help them de-stress and professional counselling to help them cope with the stress of dealing with the illness .
* Currently we work for children suffering from cancer, but we are also looking expanding into other chronic childhood ailments like anaemia, (thalassemia, aplastic and Fanconi anaemia), Bone marrow transplants, and organ transplants.
1) To achieve our long-term goals, we have worked on improving our organizational structure and streamline processes in the organisation with help from organisations who specialize in the same. 2) Have built a professional team for all the functional activities viz-HR / Operations / Facilities Management / IT / Communications/ Finance as well as Centre teams who are qualified and well experienced in their respective fields. 3) We have optimal opex coverage for the next 4 years. 4) Organisation has the support of many donors such as Corporates, Individuals, Trusts & Grants and Government funding in cash as well as in kind donations.

A few indicators to map the progress of the organisation -- full occupancy, beneficiaries’ experience ratings, feedback from donors, feedback from hospitals / doctors, yearly reduction in admin cost and cost per night while maintaining the high standards of the organisation. One of the key milestones was to streamline the processes of the organisation and launch of the new patient management system which both will be achieved by the end of this year. Another long-term goal is to have 1000 units Pan India which we are targeting to achieve in the next two years. We have made changes to the annual performance metric system for the key indicators to be more quantitative and measurable instead of qualitative. Some of them are the occupancy rate, participation rate, meeting the timeline for internal audits, maintenance issues raised, reimbursements and payments to vendors and staff, annual maintenance contracts, renewal of policies etc.

The founders Mrs Shyama and Mr Nihal Kaviratne returned to India after a 22 years stint with Unilever abroad. They were touched by the plight of cancer-affected children neglected and sleeping rough on pavements and streets around the treating hospitals. They found that parents travel to big cities for world class cancer treatment for their children. The hospitals through the generosity of a plethora of charities are able to offer low to no cost treatment to these needy children but they do not treat them as in-patients during chemo/radio therapy. The treatment and follow up may last as long as three years. When the children are not admitted into the hospital, the families are forced to stay on streets with no access to good nutritious food. This makes the children an easy prey to secondary infections in an open environment. This negates the effects of the treatment and delays their recovery. The parents, often, in desperation abandon treatment altogether. The founders decided to give these children a chance to overcome this disease. They set up of the first prototype centre of 8 units with their own funds at Parel, Mumbai in year 2006. Childhood cancers have a very high cure rate. Clean safe accommodation, good nutrition and emotional support is what these children and their parents need to give them a fighting chance to overcome the disease. St Jude India ChildCare Centres thus bridges this gap between world class cancer treatment provided by the hospitals in major cities and the need for holistic care to recover from the life threatening disease.
At St. Judes it has been our endeavor to provide a holistic approach in meeting the needs of the child patient, and with this in mind every effort is made to ensure that the child feels comfortable, safe and happy during their treatment period. Consequently, all efforts are directed to improve standards of accommodation, introducing new and improved methods of child activities such as Education / Counselling / Yoga / Music / Art Based Therapies /Games / Videos and outings . Parents too are encouraged to participate in activities to help them de-stress and cope with their problems. Very often parents leave their villages in order to avail of medical facilities available in cities. In doing so they often have to give up their livelihood. At St. Jude Centres psychosocial support is provided through professional Counselling and helping parents to learn some kind of occupational skills to enable them to make a fresh start once they go back. In order to be able to function optimally, St. Jude is supported by generous donors and well – wishers, in India and abroad. These donors comprise of individuals and Corporate houses, and Public Trusts.
To provide clean, safe and cost free accommodation to children (and their accompanying parents) who are undergoing treatment for chronic diseases like cancer in Mumbai and other cities and facilitate their recovery. To nurture and develop our sustainable model that places children undergoing treatment for cancer on the path to a happy and healthy life. In doing so we hope each child will realise his or her potential and transform their lives. In major cities of India where low cost, high quality cancer treatment is available, needy children suffering from cancer, and their parents travel to these hospitals from distant towns and villages. The hospitals do not treat them as in-patients all through the long drawn out treatment. These families often do not have a place to stay and end up on the streets, whenever the child is not admitted to hospital. St. Jude India ChildCare Centres provides these families with free of cost holistic support including housing, nutritional support, transportation to and from the hospital, counselling for the family and new skills for income generation, educational and recreational activities, including art-based therapy, music therapy and yoga. St. Jude provides "A home away from home" for these families, during these difficult times.
