Pre Vocational Training for Young Adults with Intellectual Challenges
|
Over the years, Diya has been working with only adults in the age group from 18 and above, some do join the program without any basic foundational skills and hence, the journey to self-dependence for them takes much longer. Diya feels it is the need of the hour to start reaching out to the youngsters (14 -17 years) and start early on developing the foundational skills required through pre- vocational training programs before they can be transitioned into the Vocational training program. This training will contain the foundation level of Daily living skills and Personal social skills. So that when they reach 18 years, their capacity can be built for employability skills that will prepare them for the world outside. By then we have set the mindsets for work and productivity and their interests can then be mapped to job profiles that will match their strengths and interests. Pre- vocational training is linked to building the person towards an employable pool in society. With a suitable job, they become contributing members in their family, earn respect and live a life with dignity.

Diya Foundation, Enable India, Thomson Reuters, Wells Fargo, Visa, Lemon Tree, DTSS, Amazon, Smoor Chocolates and a few other partners were able to commence Internships for People with Intellectual Disabilities. Over 26 Internship opportunities were provided and about 10 adults were placed in employment. They were chosen based on their skills and abilities. They were then matched with the requirements of the company according to the various processes in different teams. The interns were also trained on Employability soft skills. The training was rich in its value and was very systematic.
Creating employment opportunities for Persons with Intellectual disability involves a lot of preparation, awareness and back end support. It can only be possible with collective efforts of the person, family, and society Ed

Assisted Living Training for 50 Students
|
Assisted Living Training is a project in which Adults with Intellectual Disabilities co-live, share household responsibilities and learn to manage a household. Often in the families of persons with intellectual disabilities due to overprotective family members, they are unable to take up responsibility at home and this affects their independence. One way to build it is by providing a challenging yet fun environment. This program is designed to build household management skills, budget skills, personal and time management skills and self confidence. The students should be able to take care of themselves and their house in the event that their parents are out of town or in case of an immediate emergency.
The students began with one evening, then it was one night>two nights>three nights and now we are on five day stay.

We've seen positive results in the students in terms of improved organisational and household management skills. Students alternate between the different chores (cleaning, sweeping, dusting, kitchen cleaning, bathroom cleaning, etc.) they've become more cooperative in nature and some have even developed leadership skills.
|
The goal of this program is to make the students self-dependent in daily living skills and to improve their personal social skills. The overarching goal is to ensure they're able to take care of different aspects of household management in the event their parents aren't home.
