Satyabhama: community based rehabilitation of PWDs covering 95 villages of Kamakhyanagar

Project Satyabhama’ – AAHWAN was started in the month of January 2009 now runs in 95 villages of Kamakshyanagar and Kankadahad block covering 10 GPs in Dhenkanal district. The project is intended at community based rehabilitation of PWDs with a special focus on children

Goal of the Project: - Increased access to various schemes and benefits and education for all the CWDs (children with disability) and PWDs (persons with disability) and capacity building of PWDs (special focus on women and CWDs) through various empowerment process and advocacy through which they can lead their life with dignity and can be a productive member in the society.

Objective: -

• Promotion and strengthening of DPOs(Disabled People’s Organisation) at the Community level
• Empowerment of the DPOs (disabled people’s organization) on child rights issues and other developmental issues
• Increased Participation of children by formation of various groups in the school, village, G.P and Block level in an Inclusive approach
• To Promote Inclusive education of CWDs and inclusion of PWDs in the project area with a special focus on girl children and women with disability

Achievement:-
• 30 DPOs involving 250 PWDs have already formed and they are trained on micro level planning on livelihood issues
• Out of 30 DPOs 6 DPOs arealready involved in internal lending and out of them 15 PWDs are running their own business set up.
• PWDs are now availing their facilities and entitlements without any problem and the duty bearers are taking proactive steps towards the issues of the PWDs
• Child Protection Club members are taking the issues related to child protection and Inclusive education

What next:-

• Orientation to DPOs-SHAG on child rights and other developmental issue
• Orientation to the CPC on Child friendly space and Good school concept.
• Development of IEC(Information, Education, Communication) on UNCRC and UNCRPD * Estimated budget for one year 1.5 lakh
Amo Vidyalaya, catering children's early intervention, social, functional, academic needs

Amo Vidyalaya, set up in Barang Odisha, is an initiative for overall development of children catering to their early intervention, social, functionally, academically, prevocational and finally vocational needs.

Goal of the Project: - Education for all the CWDs as a whole in the long run and their inclusion as productive citizens in the community. aaina plans to make the present facilities more structured and systematic and simultaneously build a sheltered workshop where market driven quality training will be provided to the target population by skilled professionals.


Objectives
• To strive for efficient overall development includinging early intervention, functional social, and academic development of children with disabilities
• To change the mindset of community members towards children with disabilities by involving them in the process of development and training children
• To increase the professional skills of children with disabilities in the district
• To constantly strive for value addition of the products produced through quality check and market study
• To establish a sustainable system where children with disability grow as professionals and meet the demands of the community
Achievement:-
• 22 CWDs are engaged with the shelter workshop with minimum vocational training and adding a little income to their family.
What next:-
• Skill development training and Pre-vocational training programme for the CWDs above 15 years
• Establishment of full fledged shelter workshop

Ananya: community based initiative now concentrated in 260 Villages in 9 Blocks of Ganjam District.

PROJECT –ANANYA

Project Ananya’ is the first extensive community based initiative undertaken in the district of Ganjam. In the year 2000 the project started with a district wide enumeration and status survey of the persons with disability. It was started as the first support initiative on disability in South East Asia of Save the Children (UK) and is now concentrated in 260 Villages in 9 Blocks of Ganjam District.


Goal of the Project: - Strengthening the DPOs for advocating for their rights in a inclusive manner and link them with federation

Objectives
• To change the mindset of the duty bearers towards the Persons with disabilities by involving them in the process of development
• To increase the professional skills of PWDs by different skill development training.
• To establish a larger level network to fight for the rights of the PWDs-District level federation
Achievement:-
• 150 DPOs involving 1500 PWDs have already formed and out of them 50 DPOs have been linked with different financial institutions.
• More than 150 PWDs run their own business set up and lead their life with dignity and adding to their family income.
What next:-

•Visioning exercise of the DPO members and federation members
•Capacity building training for the DPO members and federation members on livelihood issues
*Estimated budget for one year 1.5 lakhh

Organisation Profile

Brief Description
Aaina, which literally means ‘Mirror’, is a voluntary organization operating in the state of Odisha, India since 1998. Persons with disabilities, children and women are the focal point of our work. Aaina has been working extensively in the state covering the rural and tribal population at one end and the professionals, administrative agencies, Govt. officials and legislators at the other end. Our work includes Community Based Rehabilitation, promoting the inclusion and rights of women & children and various other initiatives.
VISION: To see a world of identity, dignity and equal opportunities for underprivileged people, especially women, children and persons with disabilities, adopting a creative approach and needs based strategies.
IT IS WORKING WITH NEARLY 5000 PEOPLE AND CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES IN ODISHA.
