ADHAR does not receive any government aid or grant and it purely runs on parents’ contribution & donations. In fact, the association puts large efforts in garnering public donations to provide 25% subsidy on the actual monthly maintenance cost per resident so that the burden on parents gets reduced. It also carries out all infrastructural developments and expansions through donations and parents are not charged for the same.
ADHAR started admitting Mentally Challenged Adults 26 years ago and many of the parents of these residents are now aging with their income diminishing and maintenance cost increasing every day. In-spite of huge efforts by the members to raise public donations, the gap between actual costs and the parents’ contribution is widening day by day.
If ADHAR needs to sustain in future by overcoming this deficit challenge, it needs to have financial partnership with charitable trusts and foundations, who can support by providing financial assistance by –
1. Co-Guardianship of Residents by contributing for deficit
2. Sponsorship of Certain Activities on long term
ADHAR runs 2 units (1 at Badlapur with 235 residents and 1 at Nashik with 100 residents) taking lifelong care of mentally challenged adults 24*7*365. It is not a hostel but a home of special individuals where they are engaged in many meaningful and involving activities like vocational training, singing, dancing, yoga, sports and many others which keep them occupied. They follow a set routine and live a life of dignity in their own world.
ADHAR has inhouse medical center, dental care unit, dedicated kitchen taking care of specific dietary needs, laundry unit, dairy unit and gardens to make it a self-sufficient institute for the residents.
ADHAR is managed by 250+ dedicated staff & care givers who ensure complete care of the special residents and give then a meaningful life.
Social Workers, Psychiatrists & Doctors closely monitor the activities as per set standards and processes.
To sustain the future challenges, ADHAR needs to find out ways to get co-guardians and sponsors from society & corporate who will help in bridging the gap between actual cost and the Parents’ contribution on a long-term basis.
Considering the magnitude of mentally challenged adults in India today, ADHAR is contributing in a small way by providing relief to 300+ families through its activities. However, it is important to replicate the successful model of ADHAR across the country to cater to the large need and hence the responsibility of society is imperative.
ADHAR has now rich experience in managing a reasonably large institution for last 26 years and it can do so continuously in future provided it get financial stability and support. The team of staff that has built up so far possess the capability to run as well as replicate ADHAR across the country as well.
