Lalbaug Parel was the industrial hub of Mumbai starting around the 1870s, providing steady employment to over 2 lakh mill workers living in crowded and tiny 'chawls'. Both men and women worked and many joined at the young age of 16. However after a prolonged strike, the mills closed in the 1980s leaving them unemployed. While some families returned to their vilages, most stayed on. With little educational qualifications, they ended up as daily wage workers, running small businesses or getting unstable contract jobs.
The Municipal Corporation of Greater Bombay started a School Support Programme with 6 Partners to ensure that their children had better future. One of them was Educo started by Ms Meenal Srinivasan to educate economically disadvantaged children studying in this area. Educo manages Saibaba Path Mumbai Public School at Lalbaug serving 800+ children.
We envision founding a lifetime of prosperity for our children and community. Incorporating the SDG Goals, our aim is to be a 21st Century School where students have the opportunity excel in holistic learning in academics, sports, IT, social and emotional learning, arts and extra-curricular activities. We endeavor provide each child with a transformative educational experience which will prepare them to be change agents for their community /future/ better tomorrow.
Our approach is to strengthen school systems that serve the marginalized communities by leveraging teachers’ capacities to bring change in the teaching-learning environment by 1. Adoption of 21st Century Learning as a schooling norm 2. Integration of technology to aid teaching-learning practices
