SADRAG came into existence in the year 2004 when a group of women professionals gathered and organised brain storming meetings on issues concerning women in professions. As a result, Network of Professional Women in Delhi (NOPWID) came up to discuss the issues of women in different professions. Four formal meetings were later organised separately at the India International Center, New Delhi to discuss the quality of life issues of women working in the Indian Defense Sector, women working in the BPO sector, women working in professions post-Independence and to share findings on a research study concerning household money and the family. Little did we realize then that money was required to run NOPWID. We made an online group of women and started preparing an e-newsletter that became a store house of information on policy decisions to work-life balance, call for papers and conferences for women professionals. The e-newsletter was circulated online through email to around 1000 women living and working in Delhi. It ran for an year or so. In 2007, came our first community initiative in the area of basic education and child rights. I, Mala, had migrated to Noida for good. On going around with her friend, Karuna, she was pained to find hordes of "out of school" children in the age group 6- 14 despite having Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan The problem was researched and it was decided to initiate a bridge between the community and the formal school system. As a result, Ugta Suraj began with two children in a rented basement and within six months grew to 100 children functional out of community space in village Harola and Naya Bans. Our journey from 2004 to 2007 to 2015 has been of joys and sorrows. Joy when we succeeded changing one's life and sorrows when implementation challenges surmounted along with financial limitations besides bearing the general reputation of "NGOs khub Khate hai, which is very prevalent particularly in U.P. Noida was predominantly infested with charity in the name of sect and religion, we were the first ones to bring in the development paradigm in approach and implementation of programmes. We have now diversified operational areas and depend heavily upon the research that we conduct for need assessment and situational analysis.
We at SADRAG, strongly feel that we cant leave out 50% of our population out of the development paradigm just because they are women. We feel that women and children are no less than anybody on account of gender and age. If their basic education, health and skill development needs are met at par with men, women can do wonders. Also we believe in partnership between men and women rather than a confrontation.
A shaky childhood can never result into responsible adulthood therefore children need to be facilitated with basics, the rest would be managed by them. Lets dont stay as their custodians for ever.
Our programs for improving the quality of life of underprivileged children and community women, are based on lessons drawn from action research on related developmental issues.
With a firm belief in equality of life for all, SADRAG envisions a world of dignity and self respect especially for women and children.
We at SADRAG, feel pained to see disrespect and abuse of women and children happening around. The economic equations and socio-cultural rituals and practices keep women far behind their counterparts. We all understand and it is statistically proved that women and children in India do not a good status in terms of basic quality of life indicators, despite having been enshrined in our Constitution.
The demographic profile can not be complete with men alone. Women and children together men complete the demography of a given place. Then why an imbalance on account of gender and age??? SADRAG envisages that women and children must be given the status and recognition that they truly deserve, whereby they can live the life with their heads up with pride.
