Our goal is to develop the overall personality of children with intellectual disabilities through adequate education, life skill development and parent counselling so that they become socially integrated and functionally independent adults. We have 52 students in FY 2022-23. We hope to increase this to 120 students with 12-15 staff members once our non-residential school, which is under construction, is ready by end of 2023.
We have been working in this field for 12 years now. Initially we started the school with 2 students in 1 rented shop which we had converted into classroom. Today with the help of our team we have grown a lot. Currently we have 10 rented classroom with 50+ students. Based on the excellent work done by our special educators there is a lot of demand for admissions. Last year we have intoduced Smart Classroom where we have installed Interactive Digital White Boards. We are currently constructing our new school building in Bhuigaon, Vasai West. We have also started with a Vocational Training Centre for our students where we will be training them for bakery unit, stitching/sublimation unit and for computer unit. In 2022, we also placed two of our senior most student for their jobs.
Challenges: 1. Due to pandemic, the no. of students for the online education were slightly less as most of the parents did not have a smart phone. 2. Due to lockdown our building construction was also kept on hold.
-
Indicators 1. Number of students enrolling. 2. Number of students learning a specific skill. 3. We assess each child at the end of each quarter using the Individual Education Programme, which is a continuous process.
FY 2021-22 1. During the pandemic we are happy that we could conduct online classes for our students. Their learning curve was not affected. 2. During 2020-21 period we managed to enroll 4 special schools in our Digital IEP system. FY 2021-22 69 students admitted till date and have completed studies: 45 students in FY 2021-22 ( offline and online ): 4 new admissions in FY 2021-22: 1 students left school in FY 2021-22: 80%attendance for FY 2021-22: 18 students receiving vocational training till date: No student received vocational training in FY 2021-22 2 students who found employment till date and none in FY 2021-22 A non-residential school is under construction in Bhuigaon, Nalasopara, Vasai West. Suryoday School was started in August 2010 by Mr. Sundar Iyer. After having made successful strides in his corporate career, Mr. Iyer decided that it was time he took the initiative to achieve something that was truly special and meaningful. He worked with Punarvas Special School in Goregaaon, Mumbai for two years, and therefore developed a connection with the cause. In 2009, he conducted a needs-assessment study with some help from a local NGO and it was concluded that there are no appropriate facilities for children with mental disabilities on the outskirts of Mumbai. It then stirred a strong urge within him to start a school for children with mental disabilities in that region. The Suryoday Trust’s journey then began in 2010 at Nala Sopara. Today, it is a team of 7 trustees (and still growing) with strong corporate backgrounds, dedicating their time and efforts towards building an ecosystem which is able to support the needs of children with mental disabilities and helping them emerge with a strong sense of self worth, confidence and determination to keep going.
To develop the overall personality of children with mental disabilities through adequate education, life skill development and parent counselling. With this aim in mind, we started Suryoday School in Nallasopara and later a pre-vocational training centre at Kandivili that helps them transition smoothly into the adult world. We train the children from an early age so that they may be self-sufficient when they reach a certain age. We provide our children with education, occupational therapies, counselling for students and parents both. Other than all of these things we also focus on the co-curricular activities, sports, music and dance therapy. We have also started with the Vocational Training and Skill Development Centre. Our aim is to impart skills to our children in areas like Hospitality ,Retail, small scale ready to eat food production, production of simple house-hold goods like garments, bags, candles. The idea is to empower our children through income-generating activities and help them become self-sufficient.
Children with mental disabilities become socially integrated and functionally independent adults.
