Background

Organisation History
Here is a true story - straight from the heart of the Founder Trustee
"I was sitting late one evening in the eye bank and as a routine task I had to distribute a processed cornea to a patient on the central wait list. I made my first call around 7.30 pm to a 71 year old lady. The phone kept ringing and stopped after 20 rings. I called a 2nd time and heard the same 20 rings. On my 3rd attempt the lady picked up the phone and said "hello" in a shaky voice after a long pause.
I explained to the lady my purpose of calling her. After a lot of hesitation, the lady replied in Hindi "please offer the cornea to the next patient on your wait list - i can't use it" I had to probe her a little to know her reason for refusal. She had been operated once before and her surgeon had demanded for Rs. 30000/- (approx USD 700). In the hope of getting vision, she had sold off her jewelry, furniture and some personal belongings. When I called her the old lady was almost penniless. Unfortunately, her graft (cornea) had failed and she required a second surgery for which the (ruthless) surgeon demanded for another Rs 20000/- Her voice cracked up and she cried bitterly as she narrated her entire story of woe over 20 minutes. These shattering incidents happened to me when I was an eye bank manager in the year 1999-2000 This true story is just one example of the many heart breaking moments at the eye bank. There were several moments like these when I felt depressed, defeated and helpless.

G V Foundation was born from the tears of these corneally blind whose misery and frustration cannot be understood easily.
Dear reader, I would not know the state of your eyes, but as i sat down to type this true story a few years later, my eyes are still moist"

How you can help this Organisation

Volunteer Needs
Our Foundation is a Volunteer based organisation and is always looking for talent in the field of eye care. Volunteers with a science background and empathy towards the visually impaired are welcome to drop in a line. Age, Gender, Qualification, etc does not matter. Only commitment to the cause and a zeal to learn matters.

Funding Needs
Please note: Only organisations with FCRA registration are eligible to receive foreign contributions. If the organisation has mentioned the URL of a website for online donations/ further details, please copy the link into a separate browser window. Our Foundation is looking for Corpus funding which can fund sight restorative surgeries in the States of Maharashtra & Bihar. Interest accrued from the corpus can be used to restore vision to more abandoned poor patients. Currently, the Foundation raises funds per case and each case is a project in itself.
