- A study was recently done by FSG on the impact of COVID-19 on CSR funding for Indian NGOs. GuideStar India shared NGO data for sample selection and facilitated engagement of GuideStar India Certified NGOs for this study. Here are some of the findings and their initial thoughts on possible implications for NGOs:
· Most NGOs have concerns about their CSR funding, but the cuts in traditional CSR funding are likely be much higher than expected – 30 to 60%. It may be important to start thinking about how to significantly reduce costs while maintaining key capabilities, so that the work in core areas can ramp up when CSR funding returns.
· The near- and medium-term focus of CSR funders is likely to be COVID-19, so it is important to think about what your NGO can do in that context. Explore ways of leveraging your on-the-ground presence to learn about new and emerging needs and think about ways to address them.
· There may be a need for NGOs to rethink delivery of your programmes in the near and medium terms as implications of COVID-19 are likely to continue beyond the current lockdown.
- This memo by Bridgespan takes an initial look at why philanthropy is an important actor in the COVID-19 response in India, what areas philanthropies can invest in, and how philanthropists should consider investing for impact. We shared with Bridgespan, GuideStar India’s research focusing on NGOs working on the COVID-19 response. Download the full memo.
