Pagdandi
|
Pagdandi ('narrow trail' in Hindi) is an alternative educational space for the children of Jagdamba Camp, a slum community in New Delhi. Since 2009, this project has reached hundreds of children from the age of 5
Pagdandi's current initiatives include an interactive library in the community, life skills sessions, active citizenship and environmental awareness sessions, and Right to Education activities.
Pagdandi is also an opportunity for concerned citizens, students and young adults to be able to influence and impact the process of development of these children through voluntary direct intervention, by facilitating education and community action. As a volunteer driven programme, Pagdandi celebrates the potential of voluntary action and activism.

◗ To engage, motivate and inspire citizens, students and young adults towards civic responsibility and community action in the development process.

Over 30,000 people live in Jagdamba Camp, in very poor conditions. Each family has on average 5 children. The literacy level of the community is extremely low, especially among girls. There is a high drop-out rate between the ages of 6-18 years. There is a high rate of unemployment, alcoholism and substance abuse among the youth, as well as rape, domestic violence and juvenile delinquency.
Pagdandi children are provided with a safe and stimulating environment that allows them to become more focused, self-confident and ambitious. This programme empowers over 100 children every year, encouraging them to pursue their studies, rise out of poverty and make a crucial and lasting contribution to their families and community.

Saturday Skills Sessions (Bridge the Gap)
|
The Bridge the Gap Curriculum takes Environment, Citizenship and Leadership Skills to India’s young citizens in schools across the capital. The non-textbook approach of our classroom sessions focuses on experiential learning: we use games, simulation exercises, group activities and film screenings to make learning interactive and fun. Currently, the programme's weekly classes are being offered in six NDMC schools.
Additionally, the Saturday Skills Session (SSS) programme, supported by Nokia Siemens Networks, is a space for the students to learn skills such as Computer/Animation, Communication, Music, Theatre, Art/Drawing and Dance. It was felt that most of the students of these government run schools didn’t have the means to pursue training in these skill areas, but were eager to learn them nonetheless. Every Saturday, these trained or skilled volunteers come to Navyug School (Sarojini Nagar) and offer 2.5 hour sessions to students interested on these skills. SSS reaches 80-100 students every year. The SSS sessions culminate in an annual Mela, where the children showcase the skills learned in this programme.

Green the Gap
|
Green the Gap (GtG) was set up by Swechha in 2008. By reusing waste in innovative ways to create high quality, useful products, GtG empowers consumers to make choices about their shopping habits. Customers are encouraged to be active citizens who spread an environmental and social message through their choices as consumers.
The GtG workshop is in Malviya Nagar, South Delhi, right next to the Swechha office. We employ a dozen highly skilled tailors on a full-time basis, who transform old tyres, tetra packs, waste cloths, waste leather and other materials into new products. The tailors are from disadvantaged backgrounds and were looking for better working conditions than those at their previous posts in larger factories in Delhi - where working hours are long, pay is low and strict production targets must be met. We offer them fair remuneration and decent working conditions, as part of a friendly and small team.
GtG opened its shop in 23/4, Hauz Khas Village in 2011.
