Art Labs
Description
NalandaWay seeks to develop a sense of self-importance and individuality, encourage self-expression and stimulate imagination among children through its arts-based programmes. Art experiences offer children opportunities to think and feel as they explore, problem solve, express and interpret the world around them. NalandaWay plans to innovate around these opportunities by setting up an Art Lab for the benefits of students residing in slum areas/low-income schools in and around Chennai

These “Art labs” would offer specialized courses to children who show promise in fine arts, craft, music, dance, drama and other art form. Training would be provided through:

Programme Title
Arts in Education
Description
NalandaWay Foundation has followed a structured approach towards art education for children by developing an extensive art-oriented curriculum of its own. Designed with the objective of integrating art with academic content, our approach allows children between the ages of 5-18 to use art as a part of their learning process. Our programmes have been the product of careful research and inputs from art & education experts and are conducted throughout the academic year. NalandaWay’s orients teachers on how to use the curriculum cards that integrates academic curriculum with arts.

The idea is to engage students by introducing fine arts and craftwork in the syllabus and ensure that they continue to stay at school- ultimately bringing down dropout rates among students. This is achieved by empowering teachers to use NalandaWay's exclusive arts-based curriculum in classrooms and make learning an inquiry-based and fun process for children.

Programme Title
Residential art camps for adolescents growing up in traumatic backgrounds
Description
Through the course of our project experiences, we’ve realized that children from marginalised, rural and urban slum dwellings often tend to be emotionally disturbed. Many have often been physically abused and develop a tendency to fare poorly at school. They are also prone to violent behaviour and criminal activities- with some engaging with risky behaviours like substance abuse and unprotected sex. In addition, many of the children and youth lived in difficult home environments. Such homes and neighbourhoods often lack the capacity to limit delinquency and youth violence. A majority of the children lived in households with no good role models. Difficult home environments therefore limit their social efficacy and children often struggle to make successful transitions in the community. NalandaWay’s ‘Kanavu Pattarai’ workshop therefore seeks to empower and heal these children through the arts. The idea is to use art as a medium to inspire children on a range of issues and help them develop a positive outlook towards life with empathy, social responsibility and confidence

Improvisation during COVID 19 situation

The kickstart of all our school-based programs has been delayed due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, while our goals / targets remain the same as last year, we are working on revised delivery models of reaching students directly via IVRS based mobile phone delivery, community volunteers, parents as coaches, teachers and online platforms in some cases.
