Background

Organisation History
Tanzania-born NRI, Rajendra Joshi arrived in Gujarat for higher studies and decided to stay on. He began his career as a medical representative when a chance meeting with the late Roman Catholic priest Father Ramiro Erviti in Ahmedabad changed his life. Erviti, who worked in the slums, told him a sense of self respect had to be built in its dwellers. Rajendra Joshi strongly believes that slums are not irrelevant offshoots hindering Ahmedabad’s urban renewal but necessary peripheries that are keeping its centre alive.“Most people living in slums want to upgrade their lives. They don’t want freebies, despite what most people think. They just need initial support to be able to live well on their own. Saath wants to prove that they are willing to pay for services,”
Saath began as a Charitable Trust in 1989 with 2 members carrying out activities with youth in Sakalchand-mukhini- chali in Behrampura. On request of the local residents, who had many relatives in this areathis work was expanded to Vasna, a fast growing slum owing to its proximity to the highway and nearby villages. This gradually led to an Integrated Slum Development Project in Ahmedabad involving the local community. It pioneered in rejuvenating underprivileged slums and vulnerable neighborhoods into self-sustaining and developed communities changing the environment of urban slums. The programmes have since expanded to cover livelihoods, skill development, health and education, rights, urban governance, financial inclusion, rehabilitation and resettlement and other community development initiatives. Saath through its one-stop centers provides supports to slum dwellers to obtain government identities, providing them access to public benefit schemes, imparting skills leading to employment, micro-finance for vital personal consumption and setting up SMEs and providing access to habitable environment and basic education.
