Goals

  • Received Ashoka Changemakers US Prize in 2010 for most promising solution to preventing gender-based violence against women.
    Documentation of impact of youth initiative in colleges for last 10 years done through Harvard University South Asia Institute and Tata Trusts in December 2016.
    Received the Sandvik India 2017 Gender Diversity Award

Background

Organisation History
MAVA came into being in response to a newspaper appeal in 1991, inviting sensitive men from different backgrounds to come together and address issues of gender inequality.


Purpose & Strategies
MAVA’s Mission is to bring about social change, particularly in traditional, male-dominated attitudes and help stop or prevent gender-based violence and abuse of women by working primarily with Boys and Men.


Vision
MAVA’s Vision is to have gender-just society - where men, women and non-binary individuals live in harmony and with self-respect, by providing spaces for mutual growth and well-being.

Chief Executive's Profile
Harish Sadani is a leading gender rights activist who has pioneered efforts in India in 1993 as the co-founder and executive director of Men Against Violence and Abuse , where he works with young men and boys to prevent violence on women. Harish, who has done his Masters in Social Work from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, has been engaging and mentoring thousands of adolescent boys and young men across India to address healthy relationships, masculinity and sexuality-related matters and redefine masculinity, using out-of-the-box methods like interactive workshops, street theatre and travelling film festivals. Currently, he is also a Consultant and Trainer to Corporates, Universities and NGOs across India on anti-sexual harassment at workplace and other gender matters. Harish is a TEDx speaker and has been invited by national and international bodies like UN Women and UNFPA to share insights and build capacities of various stakeholders on addressing issues of gender-based violence against women. In recognition of his pioneering work, Harish has been awarded with the Ashoka Changemakers’ Award (US), Maharashtra Foundation Award, the Muktaa Sanman Award by IBN Lokmat news-channel of the CNN Group, the Sandvik India Diversity Award and the Searchlight Award for contribution towards the rights of transgender persons.
