Community Based Health Project This proposal is part of the Community Based Health Project (CBHP) which has been operated by St. Luke’s Community Health & Development Center and its Australian project partner CBHP Australia since 2010. CBHP has been operated on volunteer bases and with minor donations from Australia. Fundraising activities from CBHP Australia are on-going. CBHP is a grassroots development program which places community health workers at the centre of health care and health education in villages in rural India. It is modelled on the Comprehensive Rural Health Project, Jamkhed model of primary health. CBHP is based in Buldana, Maharashtra and is planning for a network of volunteer community health workers to form the backbone of the health system, with community involvement at all levels of decision making and project implementation. CBHP operates with a three-tier model of healthcare: with Village Health Workers (VHWs) promoting preventative care in the villages; supported by a mobile health teams run by trained doctors and nurses; as well as a low-cost effective care referral clinic in Buldana town. The development problem of the CBHP is health inequity in rural India. The development objective of CBHP is • To see health inequity in rural India a thing of the past The immediate objective of CBHP is • Empowerment of rural villagers to take ownership of their health Outputs of CBHP are
1. Select and train Village Health Workers in all Project Villages (2010-2012) 3. To conduct regular mobile health team visits in Project Villages (2010-2012) 4. To set-up and maintain a low-cost primary health care clinic for Project Villages (2012 onwards)

SOME SUGGESTED DONATIONS: SUPPORT A VHW’S TRAINING: For one month $10 For two months $20 For six months $60 For one year $120 The VHWs are the key to the CBHP program. They help educate their community, and practise preventative healthcare on a daily basis. However, ongoing training is needed to keep their knowledge up to date, which requires travel to the CBHP clinic from their remote villages. The VHWs are volunteers, and are not paid a salary. Just $10/month is enough to cover the cost of their training, and make a difference in an entire community.
BUY A SET OF WEIGHING SCALES FOR A VILLAGE $40 Malnutrition is a serious problem in rural Buldana, especially among children under five years old. Help a village take charge of its own nutritional health, by providing a means of measuring and managing malnutrition levels among its children.
PURCHASE A VHW’S MEDICAL KIT $100 As part of the VHW program, all VHWs are provided with basic medical kits, containing:
Stethoscope Blood Pressure cuff Thermometer Glucometer Logbook Iron tablets, Folic acid Paracetamol Oral Rehydration Salts
These kits are used to diagnose illness for referral and to provide basic treatment for cases such as diarrhoea and anaemia (both of which are common and serious). Not only are the kits are vital for maintaining health in these remote villages, they play a critical role in enhancing the VHW’s credibility in the community, encouraging the villagers to trust her and respect her opinions in matters of preventative health.
HELP A VILLAGE BUILD A WELL FROM LOCAL MATERIALS! $1200 In most of the villages in which CBHP works, water shortage is one of the most pressing issues. Shallow wells mean that, in the dry season, women may have to walk from one to four hours to retrieve water for basic daily needs. In many villages, the better wells are also concentrated in the richer areas of town. Without easy access to safe water, other healthy living practises are neglected, and are often ignored because the water problem is more immediate. Helping a village to construct a safe, deep well in an area where everyone may have equal access to it is one of the most positive things you can do.
