b)Increase no. of Female scholars from 20 percent to more than 25 percent in the last 3 years.
c) Increase no. of corporate donors by more than 50 percent in the last 3 years.
2. Program Replicability : Increase geographical reach and intake of beneficiries from underrepresented locations. The program covers 28 states of India and UTs.
3. Program Sustainability : increase no. of alumni joining the 'circle of giving' and donating back to the Foundation :
4. Quantifiable increase in the salary packages of the scholars with the inclusion of Training and Mentorship programs :

Qualitative:
Overall growth in the economic status of the scholars and their famiiles post completion of their scholarship programme. FFE tracks the placement details of the students once they graduate and keeps in touch with them through an active Alumni cell.

Capabilities & Challenges
FFE has the experience, combined with an extensive network of volunteers (800+) and NGO partners, a pan India presence, donor and alumni network along with a technology enabled delivery mechanism to implement the program nationally and on a sustained basis. For the successful implementation of its program, FFE leverages all its stakeholders: volunteers, students, donors, FFE’s alumni, NGO partners, all of whom are managed by FFE’s team using its current technology platform.

Monitoring Framework :
FFE’s scholarship Program is implemented based on the Board approved Annual Scholarship Policy regarding criteria for scholarship eligibility. The program is implemented by the FFE team, and is closely monitored throughout the students journey . The entire process transitioned to online mode in 2017 through a robust technology platform Salesforce to manage the entire process end-to-end. All requirements for the application process including documentation requirements are posted on the website and can be accessed by potential students and renewal students throughout India. FFE’s team accesses students for additional information as needed.

Program Capabilities
• Focus to support the pursuit of professional education (BE, BTech, MBBS, BPharm and Law) by gifted students from financially constrained backgrounds
• Tracking progress of students through the degree program and upon graduation as alumni
• Building a thriving student and alumni community through social media
• Hosting Virtual meetings to bring all stakeholders together.
• Circle of Giving: Engaging with alumni to involve them in FFE’s future (financial contributions of alumni to FFE are tracked along with other contributions including mentoring, volunteering time, etc.)
• FFE’s unique self-sustainability model through alumni contributions to support at least 2 students like themselves.
• Opportunities for over 1000+ volunteers to contribute to FFE’s programs (student verification, mentoring, training, etc.)
• Active Corporate employee engagement possible through mentoring, training, workshops, projects, seminars, internships etc.

For our students:
FFE ensures confidentiality of all student information, fulfilling its fiduciary responsibilities to the student. Students demonstrate credit of the scholarship amount to their Bank account by providing bank passbook details. Active communication with students via email/phone calls is the key to the success of all programs. FFE ensures that all information is communicated to students, including any announcements for skills training, virtual workshops covering different areas (technical and soft skills) offered by numerous corporate donors, etc. mentoring opportunities, seminars, conferences, etc. Participation in these activities is also tracked and may be included in reports. Many activity announcements are also posted on social media to increase participation. FFE interacts with its scholars regularly with questionnaires and testimonial requests to understand how the scholarship is helping them and to obtain feedback regarding other ways in which the program can benefit them. Several of the skills training programs are designed entirely based on student feedback, interest and need. Volunteer mentors who participate in the mentoring program are experienced corporate professionals; they provide feedback (qualitative) on the impact of mentoring on mentees and themselves.

For our donors:
FFE shares Annual detailed reports with donors as per the MoU, and any exceptions or deviations with regard to the implementation of the program requires prior written approval from the donor and FFE’s own legal approval. A program as well as financial audit can be conducted by donor directed agencies. FFE facilitates donor-scholar meetings, now conducted virtually, so that all program beneficiaries are connected to the donor /donor’s team. FFE facilitates all such interactions that can be arranged with prior written advanced notice. Feedback on skill training requirements are shared with corporate donors and virtual sessions are planned collaboratively leveraging the expertise of the corporate while also meeting student needs (Job readiness workshops).

Challenges:
-FFE seeks to enlist as many qualifying women candidates into the Scholarship program to promote gender equality. Howver, higher participation of women in the scholarship program, particularly in the professinal courses is a challenge.
-Technology enhancement and related costs are significant for successfully running the program across India.
-Seeking donors (corporates/individuals) to cover such important indirect but essential costs is a challenge.

Impact: Indicators & Progress
  • Indicators:
Impact of the project is assessed by the number of students who successfully complete their education and gain employment. Students are tracked to gather details about their career placement. Employment is the ultimate outcome of the scholarship program.

    Progress :
Since FFE’s inception in 1994, it has helped over 38,000 students in India by awarding scholarships and transforming their lives. During the past 30 years, more than 100,000 scholarships have been awarded to students in India, amounting to Rs. 400 crores. In FY 2023-24 alone, 16,295 students were awarded scholarships totaling to INR 78 cr to students attending 470 Engineering colleges, 310 Medical Colleges, 47 BPharm Colleges and 59 Law Institutes. The high intake of new scholarship recipients was made possible, thanks to the generous donation from FFE's donors worldwide.

    Qualitative Impact of our Scholarships:
-FFE scholars are usually ‘First Generation Learners’ and even the first in their village/town/community to pursue higher education. An FFE scholarship has a huge positive impact on their lives.
-Scholarships allow the students to focus entirely on their academics without carrying the burden of financial instability and this helps them focus on excelling in their exams and activities.
-Successful completing and employment uplifts their families from the cycle of poverty in a single generation.
    - FFE Scholars are ‘Change Agents’ and ‘Role Models’ and have a multi-generational impact, motivating their siblings, family members and others like themselves to pursue their dreams.
    - FFE alumni are FFE’s ambassadors contributing their time and talent, money, connecting FFE to the corporates that employ them, and leverage their personal, professional and social networks who also donate to FFE. They also serve as ‘Mentors’ and role models to FFE scholars and provide much needed emotional support that the scholars often lack due to the background that they hail from. From helping them garner soft skills to making career decisions, the alumni play a significant role in the FFE Mentorship Program.

Background

Organisation History
The Foundation for Excellence was founded in 1994. After selling his first company, FFE's Founder, Dr. Prabhu Goel and his wife Poonam Goel decided to use part of the proceeds to build a philanthropic foundation to provide scholarships to bright students with financial constraints for college degrees. "I started FFE because I felt a moral commitment to help as many people as possible achieve better lives" says Dr. Prabhu Goel. The initial focus was on medical and engineering degrees in India because these professional degrees assure a high likelihood of transforming the lives of the bright students. Dr. Prabhu reached out to leaders of other philanthropic organizations in Silicon Valley and built a team that included Raj Mashruwala from Indians for Collective Action, Venki Venkatesh from India Literacy Project, and Mahaveer Jain from Asha to give shape to the idea and organization. The team was expanded to include Balaji Venkateswaran from India Literacy Project and Dinesh Katiyar from Asha. Subsequently, Pradip Joshi from the Indian Senior Center was also added. This core team contributed to building the Foundation for Excellence.
Foundation For Excellence Inc. (FFE,USA), a tax exempt publicly supported charitable organization based in Santa Clara, California, USA was established in 1994. Its Indian entity, Foundation For Excellence India Trust (FFEIT)was registered in 2003 as a Public Charitable Trust in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
